My homeowners insurance with Amica went up 250% this year because of a change in my fire department's rating code. Other insurers take other factors into consideration, but not Amica.

I received no advance notice of this hike and no letter or call of explanation. When I received the statement/bill, I contacted customer service and got nowhere -- inflexible and rude. They never apologized for the hike/inconvenience or stated that they wanted to keep my business. I was a customer of Amica for 10+ years and always paid full bill on time at renewal date.

And I've filed only one claim in those years.

I've cancelled all homeowner policies (3), autos (2) and umbrella. After dealing with this experience, I'm not sure how Amica gains or retains such a high customer service rating.

I remember years ago when you had to be recommended to Amica. My former in-laws, had me look into it.

I was accepted and had only 3 claims since 1981, 1-auto not my fault, and 2-homeowners claims. The first homeowners claim was for a break-in and by the time Amica sent out their investigator I was made to feel like I was guilty of stealing my own stuff. Then in 2/14 I made a claim for ice/snow damage from all the snow this winter in CT. The water poured in through my BOW window and front door causing major structural damage.

All along I was told to get some quotes and I could use who ever I wanted, but now that quotes have come in at 12,000.00- 14,000.00 for a new wood window, solid maple front door w/side lights windows, soffit repair AMICA is changing their tune and wanting to use their own restoration company that isn't using certified contractors, using inferior/low grade materials. AMICA is not the same company anymore. They have a lot of new people that are totally clueless, their CSA dept. sucks, They are in no way competitive, I dropped my auto policy with them after 33 years and they didn't even care, I was paying 1,200.00 a year for full coverage on an '01 Dodge Ram pickup and 800.00 on a '09 Nissan Murano Full coverage to 500,000.00.

I switched to Kemper I now pay 1,100.00 for 750,000 coverage, and we added my son to our policy too.

In my opinion AMICA MUTUAL INSURANCE SUCKS!!!!!, they taken on so many riffraff customers in recent years to stay competitive I feel it hurt their Companies Reputation.

Respectfully, this sounds like sour grapes to me. If your FD changed your home's fire risk profile for legit reason, why shouldn't your insurer adjust their risk profile (and your premium) accordingly?

Like the other commenter said, you can always shop it. Btw, what do you think your "loyalty" is worth?

Ie how much discount do you believe you deserve for being a customer for 10 years? I don't disagree that you should be valued as a long term customer; but I'm curious to know what you believe this should be worth (ie in absolute terms like percent discount for your existing policy, and in relative terms like percent lower compared to other quotes you have received)
